I’m totally psyched that “The Dead Circus” by John Kaye is finally going to be made into a movie and is supposed to start filming this summer. I’m actually surprised that it has taken this long to get this 2003 Novel adapted into a movie given that John Kaye has been a successful movie writer (“Where the Buffalo Roam” and “American Hot Wax” amongst his works) as well as a Director (“Forever Lulu”). The Dead Circus is a fictionalized Los Angeles Noir novel involving the life and death of the great Bobby Fuller of the Bobby Fuller Four “I Fought the Law Fame”, Frank Sinatra and Charles Manson taking place mainly in the 1960′s and 1970′s. Call it a Rock and Roll “LA Confidential”. While I don’t think its been announced who’s playing Bobby Fuller, actor James Marsden, “Dexter” star Michael C. Hall and Oscar winner Melissa Leo have been cast.
Here is my book review of “The Dead Circus”:
The first 250 pages or so of “The Dead Circus” were incredible, easily the best written modern novel I’ve read since Ken Grimwood’s Replay. John Kaye’s writing and subject were magic for these first 250 pages as he combined fictional versions of Bobby Fuller, Charles Manson, Frank Sinatra in the “Dead Circus” that made it read like Kaye was there and we’re seeing things unfold in real time. Unfortunately, the last 50 pages were pathetic like Kaye didn’t want to bother and just called in these pages. What the hell! I was waiting for a climax- there wasn’t one. It felt like the ending of “No Country for Old Men” the movie- a great movie until the last 15 minutes or so which totally sucked and wrecked the whole movie for me’
I still recommend “The Dead Circus” as reading the first 250 pages was a great experience like riding a non-stop roller coaster through time in Los Angeles’s 60′s Rock and Roll Noir past, but beware of the last 50 or so pages-a major disappointment and a thud.
