If you’re a fan of the great Fifties Rocker, Eddie Cochran, who influenced rock groups like The Who and The Rolling Stones with his performances as well as compositions of classic rock records including “Summertime Blues”, “C’Mon Everybody”, “Twenty Flight Rock”, “Nervous Breakdown”, “My Way”, “Weekend” and many more, you’re going to love reading: “Summertime Blues” an autobiography by Sharon Sheeley, Eddie Cochran’s fiancee, which surprisingly has never been told in any kind of detail before. The best thing about “Summertime Blues” is Sharon Sheeley captures the total innocence of growing up in the 1950′s and the beginning of rock and roll as we get to relive Sharon Sheeley’s life through her eyes as she meets, hangs out, sometimes dates and later song writes with rock and roll legends like the Elvis Presley, the Everly Brothers, Ricky Nelson, Buddy Holly and of course Eddie Cochran. We find out how Sharon Sheeley literally pursued Eddie Cochran for two years to even go out with him, her engagement with Eddie Cochran and the tragic death of Eddie Cochran in a taxi crash in England for which she was riding in the taxi with him and suffered injuries. The review continues after these two live videos of Eddie Cochran performing “Summertime Blues” and “C’Mon Everybody”.
Summertime Blues is a really joyful, positive, magical book, that would make a great read for people to really understand the magic of the Fifties and growing up in an era of innocence. There are about 71 pages of incredibly rare private photos of Eddie Cochran which by itself makes the book a great buy as there doesn’t seem to be that many photos of Eddie Cochran other than the usual ones. My only criticism of the book and unfortunately there really isn’t anything one could have done about it is that there is only about 145 pages of Sharon Sheeley’s wonderful text, as Sharon Sheeley died unexpectedly of a brain hemorrhage at 62 in 2002 while in the middle of writing her memoirs and her son (who I never knew even existed) put the book together in 2010. Much of the book reads like a first draft which actually is good as it makes everything sound so heartfelt and real. I think I only spotted just a few edits by I guess her son as a few words unlike 99.5% of the book, sound like they come from 2010 but maybe that’s my imagination. The photos also could have used some text and rechecking as some people are clearly not identified correctly in the few pictures with text. All this aside, “Summertime Blues” is a great read.
