There’s a new book that’s just been published in Australia, Vanda & Young by John Tait, that I’ve been waiting 40 years to come out- now if only the definitive book on Bobby Fuller will be written! Harry Vanda and George Young were the founders and main songwriters of The Easybeats (“Friday on my Mind”, “Good Times” and many other rock classics) who played a key role in the foundation, production and success of AC-DC (George Young is Malcolm and Angus Young’s brother) and wrote and produced many of the biggest records for the past 40 years featuring International Hits by Stevie Wright (Ex-Easybeats lead singer), John Paul Young (Yesterday’s Hero, Love is in the Air), Rose Tattoo, the Angels, Marcus Hook Roll Band (a combination of AC-DC and the Easybeats), Flash and the Pan (Vanda-Young) and many other Australian Rock Bands. Hundreds of artists including Rod Stewart (Hard Road), Gary Moore, Cheetah Savoy Brown (Shot in the Head) have covered their classic rock songs. This is the first written biography on Vanda-Young and it is a very good and interesting book which I would recommend to all fans of The Easybeats, AC-DC and Vanda Young as producers and song-writers. This review continues after the Easybeats Video and AC-DC Video.
The book tells the No Holds bar actual true story of the Easybeats, Vanda-Young and the Easybeats not the BS Record Company Publicity cleaned up versions and is fascinating as many things are revealed that I had never read before such as The Easybeats members somewhat hard life emigrating to Australia, starving at times in England, George Young’s estrangement from brother Alex (who formed the group Grapefruit that was backed by the Beatles) because he didn’t move with the Young family to Australia and calling the family “mugs” for moving to Australia, Harry Vanda’s wife’s suicide during the crest of the Easybeats success, the Easybeats life in London, the years Vanda and Young spent in England after the Easybeats broke up, Easybeats drummer Tony Cahill auditioning for John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, the formation of AC-DC, the Marcus Hook Roll Band, Flash and the Pan and much much more. There is an excellent discography as well and some really interesting rare photos. About my only criticism of the book, forgive me for sounding anal, is the author misspells British Blues Giant John Mayall’s name several times as Mahall! The author does an excellent job in flowing cohesively the subject matter of Vanda and Young, the Easybeats, AC-DC, productions and songwriting, etc.
I’d recommend this book as I said to all Easybeats, Vanda-Young and AC-DC fans, and as its only available in Australia, you can find it and buy it online.
