I just read the greatest Book ever written about Rock and Roll, more Specifically Blues Rock, Canned Heat “Living the Blues” by Canned Heat Drummer, Fito de la Parra, who’s been the keeper of this great bands flame. “Living the Blues” is the Citizen Kane of Rock and Roll Books and more entertaining. Actually its Citizen Kane Meets Animal House Meets Forrest Gump on PCP! If you’re looking for a great read, “Living the Blues” is it. I hope if it isn’t optioned yet, that HBO or Showtime, turn Canned Heat and “Living the Blues” into a TV series.
“Living the Blues” tells the epic, tragic yet funny story, of Fito de la Parra’s journey from a middle class home in Mexico where he could speak little English to Rock Star Drummer and later Mastermind of Canned Heat, the greatest American Blues Rock Boogie band. The musicians of Canned Heat couldn’t have been imagined if you tried:
Bob “The Bear” Hite A Giant of a Man, A Serious Blues Record Collector, who life was a non-stop Boogie party of Excess: Food, Sex, Drugs Farts and Rock and Roll
Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson A true musical genius, perpetually depressed, basically an “idiot savant” who hardly ever washed, couldn’t get women even though he was in a Rock Band, loved Botany and Nature and wrote and sung 2 of Rocks greatest anthems: “Going Up the Country” and “On the Road Again”
Henry “Sunflower” Vestine A great lead guitarist from a wealthy educated family who took every drug in the world and more so
Larry “The Mole” Taylor An incredible talented serious no nonsence Bass Player who couldn’t deal with the lead guitarist’s drug induced antics
Adolfo “Fito” de la Parra A Middle Class College Educated Mexican who came to the United States speaking little English but became Canned Heat’s drummer and mainstay
Fito and his writing collaborators T.W. and Marlene McGarry have written an impossible to put down true life story of an American Rock band and its musicians with incredible rare photos too. The picture of a fully naked Bob the Bear Hite jumping off a diving board on page 225 in the softbound book is classic horror! What probably differentiates “Living the Blues” from other books on Rock is that the beginning of the book dealing with Fito de la Parra’s background and journey before he meets Canned Heat is really interesting unlike the other boring family backgrounds Rock band biographies usually have that one wants to skip. The truth of Canned Heat is stranger than any fiction you could invent and needs to be a Cable TV Series.
