This isn’t meant as a dig to writer Stephen King but believe it or not, rock musician (“Breakup Song”) turned horror writer Greg Kihn, writes more fun entertaining Horror. Greg Kihn’s Horror books are a great read that you literally want to read his novels in one go, they’re that much fun. Just as Stephen King’s books have been turned into movies, Greg Kihn’s should as well. Believe it or not, Greg Kihn is a better Horror writer than he is a songwriter and musician for which he’s had a very successful career.

Greg Kihn’s books are like Pop Culture Horror kind of like if “Pulp Fiction” was a horror story set in different eras. So far I have read three of his books: “Horror Show”, “Big Rock Beat” and “Mojo Hand” (if you read these books I suggest you read them in this order as they’re loosely a trilogy but each book is self contained). “Horror Show” ranks in my top 10 books of all time along with Ken Grimwood’s “Replay” and Jim Bouton’s “Ball Four”. Greg Kihn has the perfect writing style. The story is excellent but Greg’s literary style is even better. Its such an easy great read and everything flows perfectly. As good as Greg is a musician, he’s 1000 times better a writer.

“Horror Show” is a masterpiece. It’s homage to those cheesy but awesome “Grade B” 50′s horror films you watched on syndicated TV as a kid. Its twisted with great and colorful characters, particularly the main lead, low-budget filmmaker Landis Woodley, who is a classic franchise character. Greg Kihn writes in a wonderful involving fast paced but not rushed manner. The story revolves around Woodley’s horror film “Cadaver” filmed inside a morgue with human corpses. A demon-conjuring Satanist gets mixed up in this which leads to an incredible ending.

The sequel to “Horror Show” is “Big Rock Beat” set in 1967. B-movie director Landis Woodley hasn’t made a picture in 10 years when he’s hired to direct a low-budget rock-and-roll flick featuring beach bunnies, racing cars, drugs and monsters. To quote “Big Rock Beat’s” Blurb “as usual, money is tight. Producer Sol Kravitz introduces Woodley to Tijuana financier Hector Diablo, who invests a huge amount of money in the movie with the proviso that James Dean’s death car, which he has rebuilt and names The Impresser, have a starring role. But something else is attached to this movie that’s not in the script. Sol is the first to die. Then others. And the payback’s a bitch.” Basically, if you loved, “Horror Show”, you’ll love “Big Rock Beat”.

“Mojo Hand” I consider the third book of the “Trilogy” as it involves Landis Woodley’s cousin, Beau Young, ex-hippie rock guitarist who was featured in “Big Rock Beat”. To quote Publishers Weekly “This time Beau explores the smoky world of blues music. The year is 1977 and now, as sideman to harmonica-playing legend Oakland Slim, white-boy Beau is learning the ropes when a down-on-his-luck old-time blues great, Art “Spiderman” Spivey, is slashed to death in his cheap Chicago hotel. Finding that other blues masters are being killed: Piano Red in St. Louis and B. Bobby Bostic in Frisco. Beau discovers that an albino guitar player who bought a mummified hand from a voodoo priestess may somehow be connected. Annie Sweeny, the sexy young publisher of Bluesworthy magazine, takes a fancy to Beau and joins the two musicians as they bring their suspicions of a conspiracy to savvy ex-New York City cop George Jones, who is working his first homicide since moving to California. A sleazy record producer” and blues legend Robert Johnson who sold his soul to the devil and has returned, round out the cast!

If you’re looking for a great quick, entertaining fun read with no redeeming social message, read Greg Kihn! One day these masterpieces will be hit movies.
